Helping Victims vs. Retraumatizing Them, Forensic Nurse:"In the 1990s, SANE programs sprang up in communities across the country to address the inadequacy of the traditional model for sexual assault medical evidentiary exams. Payment for Forensic Exams - National Center for Victims of Crime:"With the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994, Congress specifically addressed the problem of sexual assault victims being charged with forensic exam costs.(1) Requiring states, Indian tribal governments, and local governmental agencies to assume responsibility for the "full out-of-pocket cost of forensic [sexual assault] medical exams"(2) in order to qualify for the S.T.O.P. (Services Training Officers Prosecutors) Violence Against Women Formula Grants Program, provided incentives for states to find alternative ways to cover the costs of sexual assault evidentiary exams. In order to receive these federal funds, states must certify that sexual assault victims will not be responsible for the forensic exam costs, and designate an entity to pay for the exams. Although this requirement must be met for grant eligibility, the grants available under VAWA are not intended to be used to pay for forensic exams; instead, the funding is earmarked for a variety of other services related to violent crimes against women."

Medical/Evidentiary Examinations, Child and Adolescent Abuse, Resource, Evaluation (CAARE) Diagnostic and Treatment Center, UC Davis:"Medical/evidentiary exams are provided for children brought to the Center by patrol officers and Children's Protective Services' (CPS) social workers. Results of these exams assist detectives, social workers, and prosecutors to distinguish between accidental and non-accidental injury. Data can include information such as the likelihood of finding sperm at a specific site at a specific time and the likelihood of a sexual assault victim being injured during the assault.16 Such data can aid law enforcement and prosecution efforts.
